What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet rich plasma, commonly referred to as PRP, is a concentration of platelet rich fluid derived from a patient’s own blood. There are numerous benefits of PRP including accelerated tissue and skin healing, improvement in skin texture and tone, and wrinkle reduction. PRP injections have also been shown to be a vital tool in hair restoration. To collect PRP, a standard blood draw is performed first. The blood is placed in a machine called a centrifuge to separate the blood components from one another, achieving a distinct layer of platelet rich plasma that can then be used for injections or as a topical gliding agent during microneedling.

What are the benefits?

The indications for using PRP depend on the individual goals of each patient. The benefits of PRP range from improved skin texture and tone, to accelerated hair growth. PRP utilizes your own blood components to stimulate skin to increase collagen production, improve vascularity, and increase skin elasticity—all contributing to a more youthful appearance and improved skin health. When injected into areas of dense hair follicles, it has been shown to stimulate hair growth and help with thinning hair.

Who is the ideal candidate?

The ideal candidate for PRP treatment is someone looking to enhance skin rejuvenation, promote hair growth, or accelerate results from adjacent treatments such as microneedling. Generally, they should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and should not have any conditions affecting blood or platelet function.

What can I expect from recovery?

PRP injections involve the use of a small needle to penetrate and inject the plasma solution beneath the skin surface in the desired area of treatment. It will often involve multiple small needle injections to a single area. There is very little visible injury or swelling associated with this procedure.

What are the various techniques available?

PRP can be performed as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with a number of treatments including facials, microneedling, and other injectable treatments.

The most common application of PRP in our Aesthetic center is for improvement of fine lines and wrinkles. It can be injected directly into the skin or used as a gliding agent topically with microneedling to penetrate the deeper layers of the face.

Frequently asked questions

How is PRP collected?

PRP is collected through a blood draw done in our office. A small needle will be used to collect a sample of your blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the red and white blood cells. The concentrated platelets, which are rich in growth factors, are what will be injected back into the skin.

What is the downtime for PRP injections?

Downtime is minimal as injections only use a small needle to penetrate the skin. If used in combination with other procedures such as microneedling, there will be more involved downtime such as redness to the skin.

How many PRP sessions are needed to see results?

The number of sessions needed depends on the treatment area, health of the skin and individual goals. Generally, people see noticeable improvements after 2-3 sessions. Your healthcare provider will customize a treatment plan based on your specific needs.
