About Provider Alexis L. Grucela, MD, FACS, FASCRS:

Dr. Alexis Grucela is a Robotic and Minimally Invasive Colon and Rectal Surgeon. She serves as Director of the Institute for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Chief of Colorectal Surgery at Northern Westchester Hospital. She is regarded as a top female Colon and Rectal Surgeon in Northern Westchester. Dr. Grucela comes to CareMount from NYU Langone Medical Center, New York, NY, where she served as the Program Director for the Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship, Director of Robotics Education, and was an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

During her undergraduate studies, she was an emergency medical technician and firefighter, and loved being able to help people. She realized she wanted to be involved with patient care, and this, combined with her lifelong interest in science, led to her pursuit of medicine. Dr. Grucela received her medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2005 after completing her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University graduating Cum Laude in Biological Sciences.  She received her General Surgery residency training from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine from 2005-2010.  She then went on to complete her clinical fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, in Cleveland, Ohio in 2011. She is board certified in both Colorectal and General Surgery.Dr. Grucela was drawn to subspecialty of Colon and Rectal Surgery as it allows her to provide patients with positive, tangible results and in many cases, immediate relief. She feels that curing conditions such as colon or rectal cancer or Ulcerative Colitis is an extraordinary and humbling gift.  She is experienced in Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery including Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, as well as Robotic Transanal Surgery (R-TAMIS).  She will use a robotic techniques whenever possible to provide faster recovery, the smallest incisions possible, with minimal scarring, less postoperative pain and quicker return to life and work.

Though her training and clinical experience she has acquired a particular expertise in the management of Colon and Rectal Cancer and Inflammatory Bowel Disease such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. She treats benign colorectal disease such as diverticulitis, and benign and malignant anorectal conditions such as hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, fecal incontinence, and anal cancer as well.

Academically involved at local, national, and international levels, Dr. Grucela is widely published and contributes to scientific advancement in the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery. She has lectured nationally and internationally on topics such as robotic colon and rectal resection, inflammatory bowel disease, and teaches robotic training courses.  With her expertise and enthusiasm, using a multidisciplinary approach, she will help care for patients with colon and rectal surgical issues as minimally invasive as possible,  and treat them as if they were her own family.
