From prevention to birth control, menopause and other female-specific conditions, our gynecologists will create a relationship that helps you live a healthier life overall.
General care
While routine care can begin in the early teens, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends regular pap smears and annual visits beginning at age 21.
Your gynecologist can help you with a wide range of general services including:
- Routine and yearly examinations
- Adolescent gynecology and counseling
- Contraception (birth control) counseling, medication and procedures
- Pap smears and cervical cancer screening
- Breast cancer and ovarian cancer screening
- Premenstrual syndrome management (PMS)
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Sexually-transmitted disease (STD) screening
- Urinary incontinence
- Menopause management
- Bone density testing (for osteoporosis)
- Diagnostic ultrasound
- Immunizations (including Gardasil)
- Fitness, dietary and nutrition counseling
Gynecology surgery and procedures
When medication and non-invasive gynecologic procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery is often the most effective treatment. We use the most advanced minimally-invasive techniques, supported by state-of-the-art robotic equipment to reduce pain and give you a faster recovery.
Our surgery and procedures include:
- Hysterectomy: remove the uterus
- Myomectomy: removal of non cancerous growths in the uterus called uterine fibroids or leiomyomas
- Uterine fibroid embolization: shrinking of uterine fibroids by blocking off their blood supply
- Endometriosis resection: removal of endometrial patches (displaced uterine lining) on and around your ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, intestines, and abdomen
- Sacrocolpopexy: repair of pelvic organ prolapse; a weakening of pelvic muscles commonly caused by menopause, childbirth or a hysterectomy.
- Advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery: minimally invasive options
- Colposcopy: test to look at cells in cervix, vagina and vulva
- Dilation and Curettage (D & C): removal of abnormal tissue from inside the uterus
- Loop electrosurgical excision (LEEP) : removal of abnormal tissue on the surface of the cervix
- Uterine endometrial ablation: removal of a thin layer of tissue (endometrium) that lines the uterus to stop or reduce heavy menstrual bleeding
- NovaSure: customized type of Endometrial Ablation procedure
- Urogynecology: including pelvic reconstructive surgery

We offer fetal motoring and treatment leading up to high-risk pregnancy and after the delivery. Some risk factors and conditions our perinatal specialists treat are:
- Preeclampsia: a condition characterized by high blood pressure
- Preterm birth: when labor starts between weeks 20–37

- Blood disorders
- Maternal weight: being over or underweight
- Maternal age: special care for women under 17 and over 35
- Diabetes and other serious preexisting conditions
Midwifery/Doula
For many, midwives and/or doulas are an important part or addition to an expectant mother’s birth plan, especially if you are planning for a natural birth, or non-hospital birth. Midwives and doulas can provide you with individualized education, counseling and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support.
Please note: Working with a midwife may not be an option for many women due to their personal health histories/situations. Consult your gynecologist about your birthing plan.
At Optum, our certified nurse-midwives do more than deliver babies. They are trained to offer holistic and comprehensive gynecological care for life, including:
- Annual check-ups
- Health screenings
- Family planning
- Obstetrical care
- Menopause symptom management
- Senior care
Why work with a midwife?
- Better chances of having a natural birth
- Reduced need for intervention, drugs and even cesarean birth (pain management techniques)
- Decreased risk of preterm birth
- Lower costs for both clients and insurers
- Increased chances of having a positive start to breastfeeding
