What is an ear setback (Otoplasty)?
Sometimes a defect in the ears is apparent after birth or as a child develops, causing
the ears to appear misshapen or more pronounced.
Ear setback, or otoplasty, creates symmetry and proportion to the ears. Our skilled
surgeons can perform ear surgery to correct various issues in the ears, including the
size, shape, or position of the ears. Incisions are typically created on the back or folds of
the ears, making them easily hidden.
Our highly skilled plastic surgeons will design a personalized plan to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.
What are the benefits?
After your ear setback procedure, you will experience:
- Better proportion and symmetry
- Improved self-confidence
- Long-lasting results
- Well-hidden scars
- Beautiful, natural results
Who is the ideal candidate?
Patients with asymmetrical, misshapen, or overly protruding ears are usually candidates for ear surgery. Ideal candidates are at a healthy weight, do not have major medical issues, and do not smoke. It is also important for candidates to have realistic expectations for their results.
What can I expect from recovery?
After ear setback surgery, you can expect tenderness and swelling. Pain medication will be provided to ease discomfort. The ears will be carefully bandaged, with bandages required to stay in place to promote healing. Your surgeon will keep track of your progress with postoperative appointments to ensure proper healing.
Frequently asked questions
How is ear setback usually performed?
There are several different approaches to ear setback depending on one’s specific anatomy. Incisions are typically behind the ear and situated out of sight in the ear crease. Depending on the operation being performed, sutures may be used to pull back the ears. In more significant cases, small amounts of cartilage may be removed or re-shaped.
What are the risks of otoplasty?
Beyond the general risks of cosmetic surgery that include bleeding, infection, asymmetry and poor scaring, specific risks of an ear setback include loss of the setback effect- the ear(s) returns to its original position. This may require a secondary operation to correct.
What results can I expect after ear setback?
Less prominent ears which are situated closer to one’s head when viewed from the front.
