What is an inverted nipple repair?

Normal nipples project outward, giving breasts a natural appearance. Inverted nipples, which can occur in one or both breasts, lie flat against the breast or invert into the breast instead of protruding naturally. A woman may seek an inverted nipple repair for aesthetic reasons, to improve hygiene, or to provide ease when breastfeeding.

Nipple inversion is classified, depending on the severity. Grade 1 is a mild type of inverted nipple that typically does not require surgery. Grades 2 and 3 are moderate to severe, requiring surgery for a permanent fix.

Our skilled plastic surgeons can perform an inverted nipple repair procedure to enhance the natural beauty of your breasts.

What are the benefits?

The plastic surgeons at Optum Plastic Surgery in New York strive to provide you with personalized care and beautiful, natural results. After an inverted nipple repair procedure, you can expect:

  • A natural-looking breast
  • A boost in self-confidence
  • Easier breastfeeding
  • Improved breast hygiene
  • Aesthetically pleasing and functional nipples

Who is the ideal candidate?

Patients experiencing flat or inverted nipples are typically good candidates. Additionally, ideal candidates do not smoke or consume nicotine, have completed breast feeding at least 6-8 months prior to surgery and are in good general health. Patients looking to have children in the future can discuss the procedure and how it may impact future breast feeding.

What can I expect from recovery?

Inverted nipple repairs can be done under local anesthesia, making recovery much easier than other procedures. After the short procedure, the nipple will be sutured to an external stent which will be removed after a week. Your plastic surgeon will often recommend over-the-counter pain medication to manage discomfort, and you will be able to return to daily activity soon after the procedure.
