What is implant removal?

Implant removal is usually performed through the same incisions used to place the implants, though this may vary depending on the reason for implant removal. In select cases, the capsule (scar tissue) surrounding the implant may also be partially or completely removed. The decision to remove the capsule may be done at the consultation or based on findings during your surgical procedure.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of implant removal vary with the reasons for pursuing an implant removal. The plastic surgeons at Optum Plastic Surgery in New York strive to provide you with personalized care and will discuss the benefits of implant removal alone or in combination with other surgical procedures.

Who is the ideal candidate?

Ideal candidates for an implant removal procedure are in good physical health, stable weight, are non-smokers, and are up to date on any recommended breast surveillance imaging (typically a mammogram).

What can I expect from recovery?

Depending on your specific surgical procedure, your surgeon may choose to place surgical drains following your implant removal which will remain in place for ~ 1 week. You should expect some breast soreness and swelling for at least the first 10-14 days following surgery.

Frequently asked questions

What are the risks associated with implant removal?

The risks of implant removal do not exceed the general risks of plastic surgery including unpredictable scarring, infection, asymmetry and bleeding.

What results should I expect after an implant removal procedure?

If you are having your implants removed as a single surgery, you should expect a change in the volume and contour of your breasts. Your surgeon will help you understand the appearance you can expect after your implants are removed and will discuss any additional procedures that can be performed to help you achieve the results you desire.
