What is liposuction?

Liposuction, or “lipo” for short, removes areas of stubborn fat, helping to slim and reshape your body. During surgery, a thin tube, called a cannula, is inserted through small incisions. The cannula is carefully passed through the fatty tissue breaking up the fat tissue and suctioning it out. The fat is collected to be disposed of or can be saved and prepared for fat transfer procedures (fat grafting).

Liposuction can be done on various parts of the body, including: abdomen, back, waist, thighs, buttocks, arms, and neck

At Optum Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons are committed to providing personalized care and will work with you to address all your areas of concern. Liposuction will leave you with a more toned physique, enhancing your natural beauty. Let us help you look as good on the outside as you feel on the inside!

What are the benefits?

Our expert surgeons view your body as a canvas. They will apply their surgical artistry to give you a natural, toned outcome.

After liposuction, you can expect:

  • A significant reduction in stubborn body fat
  • Improved body contours and proportion
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Better fitting clothing
  • Beautiful, natural results

Who is the ideal candidate?

Your surgeon will examine you to determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction. Before the procedure, you should be at or near your ideal body weight. Additionally, you should have good skin elasticity. Ideal candidates should be in good physical health and must refrain from smoking.

What can I expect from recovery?

Recovery after liposuction typically takes a few weeks. Patients can expect bruising, swelling, and soreness. Medication will be provided to help with the pain. Compression garments are worn to limit fluid retention, aid swelling, and encourage the skin to shrink nicely. Your surgeon will monitor your progress with postoperative appointments, ensuring proper healing and beautiful, natural results.

Frequently asked questions

How is liposuction typically performed?

Liposuction is typically performed through a series of small (~3-4mm) incisions. A canula (hollow tube) is hooked up to a device which produces suction. Excess subcutaneous tissue (fat) is removed by repeatedly passing the cannula through the tissue.

What are the risks associated with liposuction?

In addition to the general risks of cosmetic surgery including unpredictable scarring, infection, asymmetry and bleeding, some specific risks of liposuction include contour irregularities, under / overcorrection and prolonged swelling.

What results can I expect after liposuction?

Restoration of athletic contours overlying the region undergoing liposuction and often improvement is the way clothes fit.
