Listen to the audioListen to the full interview on Radio Catskill’s website

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke. While strokes are a leading cause of death and disability, up to 80% are preventable.

In honor of National Stroke Awareness Month, Radio Catskill spoke with Dr. Kavita Aggarwal, a primary care physician at Optum Care, about recognizing the signs and reducing risk.

Dr. Aggarwal shared the CDC’s FAST acronym to identify stroke symptoms:

  • F – Face drooping
  • A – Arm weakness
  • S – Speech difficulty
  • T – Time to call 911

“Most treatments must be given within three hours. Don’t drive—call 911,” she emphasized.

Who’s at risk of having a stroke?

Stroke risk increases with age, but 1 in 7 strokes now occurs in adults under 50. African American and Hispanic individuals face higher risks due to conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

Stroke prevention tips trough lifestyle

Dr. Aggarwal encourages patients to take control of their health by:

  • Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fiber
  • Exercising regularly (at least 2.5 hours/week)
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol

“Make sure you schedule your annual physical. That’s the foundation for preventing these serious events,” she added.
