What is (Brachioplasty) Arm Lift?

Weight fluctuations, genetics, and aging often cause changes in the body, including the upper arms. The arms, like many other areas of the body, can experience loosening of the tissue and skin, causing a sagging look, sometimes referred to as “bat wings.”

Arm lift surgery, also referred to as Brachioplasty, removes the excess skin and fat from the underside of the upper arms, typically from elbow to armpit. Your surgeon will carefully remove the tissue while tightening the arms, resulting in a more sculpted, youthful appearance.

What are the benefits?

At Optum Plastic Surgery in New York, our skilled surgeons strive to give you the best possible, naturally beautiful outcome. After your Brachioplasty, you will experience:

  • Firmer, more toned arms
  • Improved arm contour and more youthful appearance
  • A renewed sense of self-confidence
  • Improved fit to your clothing
  • Beautiful, natural results

Who is the ideal candidate?

Generally, patients with significant skin laxity in the upper arms are candidates for an arm lift. ideal candidates for an arm lift are at, or close to their ideal weight, do not smoke or consume nicotine and are in good general health.

What can I expect from recovery?

After a Brachioplasty surgery, arms will be placed in dressings and compression garments to avoid excess fluid buildup and swelling. Compression garments will need to be worn for two to four weeks while the arms heal. Pain medication will be prescribed to aid discomfort in the days following the procedure. Your plastic surgeon will monitor your progress and healing with follow-up appointments, and you will likely be able to return to modified activity 1-2 weeks after surgery. Scars will take some time to heal but are well concealed in the inner arm and armpit.

Frequently asked questions

How is an arm lift procedure performed?

An arm lift procedure is performed by removing extra skin and subcutaneous tissue (fat) from the inner arm, typically from elbow to armpit. Depending on the recommendations of your surgeon, liposuction may also be recommended. A typical arm lift results in a scar from the elbow to the armpit which is concealed within the inner aspect of the arm, and occasionally within the armpit.

What are the risks associated with arm lift surgery?

In addition to the general risks of cosmetic surgery including unpredictable scarring, infection, asymmetry and bleeding, some specific risks of an arm lift are temporary or, in very rare cases, permanent numbness on the inner aspect of the arm.

What results should I expect after an arm lift?

Improved contour of the arms with elimination of a “winged” appearance with arms extended. Patients also report improvement in the way their clothes fit and overall self-confidence.
