Dr. Michael Guma is the Director of Rheumatology for Optum in NJ. Raised in Secaucus, he attended Wake Forest University, The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, and has a master’s degree in medical education from the University of New England. He trained in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Saint Michaels Medical Center in Newark, NJ. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
With regard to patient care, Dr. Guma’s philosophy is, “I try to treat my patients as I would want to be treated. It’s important to try and give patients the time to tell their story. There’s a lot to be learned when we listen. Patient care is not a one way street, there needs to be communication and respect in both directions.”
Along with the many awards Dr. Guma has received along the years he also is a Co-Founder / Vice President of the Guma Family Foundation. This foundation gives at least $10,000/year to the Tomorrows Children’s Fund of Hackensack University Medical Center to the families of children with brain tumors. Dr. Guma is currently married with two grown children. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is a musician. He also has done several medical mission trips to The Dominican Republic/Haiti.
