Choosing the right primary care doctor

Your primary care doctor (PCP) is like a health coach who helps you stay healthy. But how do you choose the best one for you? Here are some simple questions to help you decide:

1. Where is the office?

  • Is the office close to your home or work?
  • Can you easily get X-rays or blood tests there?
  • Can the PCP send you to other doctors in the same place if you need them?

2. What are the doctor’s hours?

  • Does the doctor have times that fit your schedule?
  • Are they open early in the morning or late at night?
  • Can you get an appointment on the same day if you’re not feeling well?

3. What is the doctor’s background?

  • Where did the doctor go to medical school?
  • What special training do they have?
  • Are they part of any important medical groups?
  • Do they have any special skills or areas they focus on?
  • Which hospitals can they work at?

4. What is the office like?

  • Is the office a nice and comfy place to visit?
  • Is the atmosphere warm and welcoming?
  • Are the people there friendly and helpful?
  • Are the rooms and waiting areas designed to make you feel comfortable?

 5. How do the doctors talk to each other?

  • At Optum, you can get all your healthcare in one place.
  • Our doctors can see all your medical records on their computers, so you don’t have to do the same tests over and over.
  • They can work together to make sure you get the best care.

6. How easy is it to schedule tests?

  • Can you set up tests or labs when you leave the doctor’s office?
  • Can you call one number to schedule everything you need?
  • Can you do multiple tests on the same day to save time?

By thinking about these questions, you can find a primary care doctor who will help you stay healthy and feel good!
